Despite numerous studies showing that more than half of the meetings people attend lack value, many continue to participate. The fear of alienating colleagues or facing management retribution often keeps them from declining. However, there is a more tactful way to bow out of these unproductive gatherings.
Instead of bluntly stating, “this meeting is pointless, so I’m not attending anymore,” offer a reasonable explanation and an alternative solution. Explain the demands of your workload and suggest remaining available over instant messaging during that time slot in case an issue arises that requires your input. Everyone understands time constraints, and offering to be available shows your willingness to help if needed.
Often, people get trapped in a cycle of meetings for the sake of meetings. It takes someone bold to decline and break this cycle. When you stop attending valueless meetings, others may realize they can do the same. This can lead to the cancellation of unnecessary meetings as everyone involved recognizes the waste of time.
Being protective of your time at work isn’t necessarily a selfish act. In fact, when it comes to unnecessary meetings, this kind of “selfishness” can lead to more productive working hours for everyone. So, take the initiative to reclaim your time and encourage a more efficient work environment.
