Colleagues often assume they’re required to go to every meeting. However, the sooner you learn to graciously decline, the more productive you’ll ultimately be.
Ask yourself “Will I add value or learn something?” If the answer is no, tell the organiser you can’t attend. Other good reasons to decline:
- If the meeting is too premature for you to join:
- If you’re not the right person:
- If you’re too senior:
- If you’re only relevant to one section of the meeting:

Ask for an Agenda and / or propose an alternative. You colleagues will eventually thank you as they improve their meeting effectiveness.
