Know your worth in a world that’s still figuring itself out

Every generation inherits a version of work that doesn’t quite fit. Ours? It’s part gig, part algorithm, part guesswork.

The last big shift – the Industrial Revolution – built the familiar shape of work: bosses at the top, workers at the bottom, and a system designed to squeeze as much output as possible from both people and resources. It wasn’t subtle. It was visible. You could see the factory. You could point to the hierarchy.

Today’s version is quieter, but no less powerful.

Work is now fragmented. Digital. Often invisible. Instead of factories, we have platforms. Instead of supervisors, we have systems. Instead of long careers, we have short contracts, side hustles, and “flexibility” that mostly benefits someone else.

And here’s the risk: when work becomes abstract, so does your value.

If you’re a new entrant, this matters. A lot.

Because exploitation doesn’t always look like long hours and low pay anymore. Sometimes it looks like unpaid “experience,” endless revisions, vague promises, or algorithms nudging you to do just a bit more for a bit less.

So what’s the nudge?

Start by knowing your value. Not your job title – your actual contribution. What problems do you solve? What do people rely on you for? Say it plainly. It’s harder to underpay or overlook someone who understands their worth.

Find your people. Good connections matter more than ever. That might be mentors, peers, or even modern versions of trade unions – collective voices that push back when things tip too far. In a fractured world of work, solidarity still has teeth.

Don’t confuse access with opportunity. Just because the door is open—via a platform, an app, or an “exciting gig” – doesn’t mean it leads somewhere stable.

This new world of work is still being written. The rules aren’t fixed. The systems aren’t neutral.

But one thing hasn’t changed:
The people who do best aren’t always the loudest – they’re the ones who understand their value, protect it, and quietly insist that it matters.

Even now. Especially now.
