The five-minute rebellion

Let’s be honest – most of modern work is just… sitting.

Sitting in meetings.
Sitting on calls.
Sitting while someone says “quick one” and 45 minutes later you’re still there… sitting.

And while our feeds are busy telling us how thrilled everyone is to announce something, our bodies are quietly keeping score.

Turns out, they’re not thrilled at all.

Cappuccino club reality

Research recently told us what most of us already feel: we spend far too much of our day glued to a chair. And it’s not just about feeling a bit stiff. Long stretches of sitting are linked to things like fatigue, low mood, and bigger health risks over time.

But here’s the part worth actually paying attention to (in between the Viva posts).

A five-minute walk every hour. That’s it.

Not a full lifestyle overhaul.
Not a 5am ice bath followed by journalling and gratitude.
Just… get up and walk for five minutes.

People in the study who did this felt:

  • less tired
  • more alert
  • in a better mood
  • more productive (yes, really)

Which is slightly ironic, given how guilty people feel stepping away from their desk like they’re committing a minor corporate offence.

The quiet fear nobody admits

You’ve probably thought it:

“If I get up now, will it look like I’m not working?”

Meanwhile, staying glued to your chair and producing your 7th slightly-lower-quality output of the day is somehow seen as commitment.

This is the bit we don’t challenge enough.

Because the truth is: looking busy and being effective are not the same thing.

Practical rebellion (that won’t get you fired)

This is where we keep it simple:

  • Take a five-minute walk every hour (your brain will thank you)
  • Turn calls into walk-and-talks (camera off, dignity intact)
  • Suggest the occasional walking meeting (yes, even if it feels rebellious)
  • Pace while on a call instead of performing the “serious nod on mute”

No grand announcement needed. No LinkedIn post required.

Just… do it.

Final sip

In a world of “we’re thrilled to announce,” here’s something actually worth doing:

Move.

Quietly. Consistently. Without making it a brand.

Because the people who are truly getting by – and getting better – aren’t the ones writing perfect posts about productivity.

They’re the ones who stood up, went for a walk, and came back clearer than before.
