Trust fuels great work

I once worked with a classic “doom manager.”
Every email copied him. Every decision rerouted through him. Every small task double-checked. His team looked busy – but nothing really moved.

The problem wasn’t capability. It was trust.

Without trust, work slows, creativity dies, and people disengage. For those starting out, this matters more than you think – because trust isn’t just something you receive, it’s something you build.

Here’s how to do both:

1. Make reliability your brand
Do what you say, when you say. Small promises kept consistently build big trust.

2. Show your thinking
Don’t just deliver outcomes – explain your reasoning. It helps others feel confident in your judgement.

3. Communicate early, not perfectly
Silence creates doubt. Share progress, flag risks, and ask for input before problems grow.

4. Give trust to earn trust
Support teammates, avoid blame, and assume positive intent. Trust is often mirrored.

5. Ask for ownership
Say, “I’d like to take this end-to-end.” Then deliver. Autonomy grows where it’s proven safe.

The doom manager never realised it – but the more he controlled, the less control he actually had.

In great teams, trust replaces friction.
And when you become someone people trust, opportunities tend to find you.

That’s how you move from doing tasks… to building a career.
